Therapy with Adolescents & Young Adults

About the service

Teenagers can be faced with various challenges during their adolescent years. This can be linked to difficulties with evolving peer relationships, developing an identity (which is of particular importance for young people who have been adopted), and the transition to adulthood. Issues may include self-harm, relationship difficulties, and self-esteem.

Benefits of the service

Adolescents and young adults may benefit from their own, direct, specific therapy. This may involve attachment focused approaches such as cognitive analytic therapy which focuses on understanding how early attachment experiences impacts upon current relationships, and how strategies that started out as survival mechanisms, may now have become unhelpful relationship patterns. Cognitive behavioural therapy may also be helpful for some young people to understand how thoughts and feelings impact upon behaviour.

Other therapies such as yoga therapy can also be beneficial for young people, to learn ways of managing emotions, and enhance self care. Creative approaches such as drama therapy can help young people to express how they are feeling.

Speech and language therapy

Speech and language therapy is often used as a key component of our Autism Assessment process. This includes assessment of speech and communication difficulties.

Therapeutic parenting

Therapeutic parenting is an approach that involves a high level of nurture which aims to increase the child’s sense of safety within the parent child relationship.
